This image is inspired by an ancient story from history’s pages, the story of ‘Pentecost’. The story is well-known to christians all over the world, and is still celebrated each year.
It is set around the time of Jesus death and resurrection. Just before Jesus died he spoke to his disciples about this thing called the ‘Holy Spirit’. He explained to them that after his death and resurrection, he would go back to heaven to be with his father (God). The disciples were unhappy at the thought of losing Jesus, but he went on to explain how he needed to go in order for the Holy Spirit to come.
After Jesus died on the cross he was buried in a tomb. Three days later he came back to life and reappeared to his disciples. He compelled them not to leave Jerusalem once he had gone up to heaven, but to “wait for the gift my Father promised…. in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Once Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples did as he had asked and hung around in Jerusalum. About a week had passed and the disciples were gathered together in a room, which is thought to be the same room as the famous ‘Last Supper’. Finally their wait was over and the Holy Spirit came like a wildfire!
‘When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force—no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them.’ Acts 2:1-4
