Australian born artist Catherine Leung is best known for her photographs that are rich in visual-storytelling. Her main theme is the human condition – exploring love, loss and what lies beyond the natural realm. Her love of photography started at the age of seventeen, influenced by her dad who would set up a darkroom in the family bathroom. Her Year 12 major artwork combining analogue photography, digital imaging and poetry was selected for ARTEXPRESS – exhibiting in Sydney, San Francisco and Japan.
After leaving school she completed an Associate Diploma of Fine Arts, followed by a Bachelor of Visual Communications (Photography & Digital Imaging). Starting out her career as a digital photographic retoucher, she quickly moved into the role of photographer.
After sixteen years as a portrait photographer, she began following her desire to create art. She has been a finalist in the Olive Cotton Award and Contemporary Art Awards. In 2016 she was involved in group exhibitions at The Manning Bar Sydney, Brunswick St Gallery and St Micheal’s Gallery, Melbourne. In 2017 she was awarded a Special Merit in the Figurative Art Awards, and Highly Commneded in the Magenta Artists Art Prize.
One of her earliest influences, 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron said: “If you work on your creativity you deepen your spirituality, and if you work on your spirituality you deepen your creativity”. Catherine Leung combines both creativity and spirituality to create stories that are common to us all, and leave us with a sense of connecting with our own spirituality.
